Tumwater City and Location

The City of Tumwater is located at the southern tip of Puget Sound at the junction Interstate 5 and Highway 101. Tumwater is just south of our state Capitol, Olympia and shares a portion of its boundaries with the state Capitol Olympia.   It is a little over an hour to Seattle, the Pacific Ocean beaches, the Olympic Peninsula or Mount Rainier.

Tumwater History

Olympia Brewery

Tumwater is the oldest American settlement on Puget Sound and has a rich history.  The city  is best known as home of the former Olympia Brewery, owned by the Schmidt family.  The old brewhouse, is located on  bank of Deschutes River overlooking Tumwater Park. The brewery closed in 2003, but the old brewhouse stands as the most architectural landmark.   Three waterfalls have been preserved in the Tumwater Falls Park.

Tumwater Falls Park

110 Deschutes Parkway Southwest, Tumwater, WA 98501. Riverside recreation on 15 acres with trails, cascades, lawns & a children’s play area. Almost 50 years ago, one of Thurston County’s most loved and picturesque parks opened to the public. The Tumwater Falls Park, owned and operated by the Olympia Tumwater Foundation is now one of the most popular private parks in the region. Wander along the Deschutes River at the base of the falls.  It’s a great place to watch the salmon run (late August through early October).

Schmidt House

330 Schmidt Pl SW, Tumwater, WA 98501. The Schmidt House built in 1904 for the Olympia Brewing Company by founder Leopold Schmidt is owned and operated by the Olympia Tumwater Foundation. Crosby House

702 Deschutes Way SW,  Tumwater, WA 98501. (adjacent to the Henderson House)  The Crosby House dates from ca. 1860 and was built by Nathaniel Crosby III after he married Cordelia Jane Smith in August of 1860. This House is owned by the City now and operated by the Daughters of the Pioneers.

Henderson House

602 Deschutes Way, Tumwater, WA 98501. The Henderson House is a two-and-a-half story home located near the lower Tumwater Falls. The house was built in 1905 for William Naumann, a brewmaster from Hamburg, Germany who worked across the river at the Olympia Brewing Company. In 1974 the house was purchased by the City of Tumwater with the aim of restoring its dignity and using it as a museum.
